The first in the series was created in 2018 in Ghent, Belgium. Its shape echoed the corridor of the building it was built in, simultaneously simulating the cardboard boxes I remember as places of play and shelter from childhood. Reflection Room 1 was approximately 250x200x200cm (lxwxh) and built from cardboard boxes, wood, paper-mâché and insulation material. The building process took one month, with the help of a diverse group of people. The shared food and drinks and the personal stories I was trusted with over long hours of routinised action became an integral part of the final sculpture.

Referencing the concept of a white cube, visitors were invited to express themselves inside the sculpture after its completion. Reflection Room 1 was part of a self-created indoor playground, made for the exhibition Spelig. The remnants found a new purpose in the performance piece Construct – Deconstruct, performed in collaboration with musician and sound artist Jan D’Haene.
